Georgian-era hand-colored engraving titled “Diana & Actaeon.”
Published in 1799 by Edward Harding, Pall Mall. (Harding was a London publisher and printmaker who later served as librarian to Queen Charlotte).
Signed in the plate by Francesco Bartolozzi, the celebrated Italian master printmaker and founding member of the Royal Academy.
A design by Giovanni Battista Cipriani RA (1727–1785) – Inscribed as “Cipriani del.”
This illustrates the classical narrative from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The hunter Actaeon accidentally encounters the virgin goddess Diana and her nymphs bathing in a hidden forest stream. This is right before Actaeon’s transformation.
