19th-century antique watercolor-on-paper portrait depicting Major General James Robert Brunker (1806–1869) during his early military career in the 1820s.
Staggering level of unbroken historical provenance, and remains housed in its original, period frame.
Born in Dublin in 1806, Major General James Robert Brunker rose steadily through the British Army ranks, eventually serving as the Commander of British Troops in China and Hong Kong, where he died in 1869.
He is pictured here in his 1820s military coatee with a high collar and gold epaulets.
The reverse of the frame features an extensive, highly detailed hand-written family lineage and chronological service timeline penned by a descendant (“My Great Great Uncle”). It details his:Birth, marriages (to Georgina Forbes in Jamaica, and Marianne Molyneux in Woolwich), and death in Hong Kong.
Exact military promotions from his start as an Ensign in the 91st (Argyllshire) Regiment in 1825, his transfer to the 15th Foot (East Yorkshire) in 1833, up to his rank as Major General in 1865.
The painting is beautifully presented in a stunning, wide 19th-century birds-eye maple with a gilded inner slip. It retains its original printed maker’s label from “Cranfield, 23 Westmorland St., Dublin”,
