Description
42cm x 34cm
Engraving after the master British landscape artist, Joseph Mallord William Turner. Titled “The Goddess of Discord in the Garden of the Hesperides,” this plate was engraved by Thomas Abiel Prior and published in the late 1850s.
This is story from Greek mythology where the Goddess of Discord, Eris, is shown picking a golden apple. The serpent-like dragon Ladon can be seen guarding the garden. This small act of picking the “Apple of Contention” set in motion the events leading to the Trojan War.
